The Launceston Salinity Action Group (previously GLA Salinity Working Group) formed through a recognition that a coordinated approach to urban salinity is critical to effective management. It represents the culmination of projects since 2001 that sought to illustrate salinity risk.
Local Government was aided in this process by the Tasmanian Government, NRM North, Tamar NRM and professionals working in the field. Considerable Australian Government funding went into investigations of groundwater flow in one of the more seriously affected areas, Prospect Vale. Surface- and ground-water was also monitored across the GLA for elevated salinity levels. A more recent project explored how Councils can address development in salinity risk areas such that affects on both private and public infrastructure are minimised, and so that activities do not exacerbate salinity in the locality.
